Navigating Airspace Disruptions in Ukraine

Client: Global consumer electronics manufacturer

Industry: Consumer electronics

Supply Chain Failure: Geopolitical disruption

A pharmaceutical company runs a small volume, contracted, just-in-time supply chain that spans the European Union and Asia. They ship most of their components between facilities by air. When Russia invaded Ukraine in February of 2022 heavy restrictions were placed on the use of Russian airspace by non-Russian operators. This, along with ongoing instability in the Middle East means that what was, in January a ~5,000nm trip between Western Europe and East Asia now became a ~7300nm trip. This created delays related to additional stops required by typical cargo aircraft necessitating sorts and additional customs permissions creating days of additional shipment time. They leveraged LOWI’s strategy to navigate new routing constraints, enabling uninterrupted supply continuity while their 3PL implemented a permanent solution.
